We take a look at what will be hot in the kitchen next year. From high-tech to the more traditional, here are the kitchen trends you can expect to see in 2016.
As we come to the end of 2015, it’s time to look forward to the New Year and ask what kitchen design trends are on the horizon. In 2016 the kitchen keywords will be technology, personalization and design. Here are the top trends you can expect to see in showrooms next year:
Personalization and Personality
Gone are the days of neutral colors and standard shaker units. These days, kitchens are more about personalization. As more and more people make the kitchen the center of their home, the sorts of design ideas that might have applied elsewhere in the house are slowly migrating to the kitchen.
From bright colors on the walls to patterned tiles on the floor, bold design in the kitchen is gaining in popularity. For inspiration, why not check out Pinterest, where you can browse thousands of images for inspiration. Try searching ‘kitchen bold color’, for example.
Tiles are a great way to inject some personality and color into your kitchen. Many leading stockists now offer a huge range of colorful tiles with unusual designs, and it is even possible to commission your own tile designs from companies such as Kate Glanville. Kitchenware is becoming increasingly personalized too: from pots and pans available in an increasingly wide variety of colors, to cookers and even taps that can be personalized to suit your preferences. The latest taps, for example, can emit chilled sparkling water on demand!
As we become increasingly dependent on technology, kitchen design has adapted to account for this. Kitchen work surfaces with power points are becoming more and more popular for those who wish to use their laptop at the breakfast bar.
It is also possible to fit your kitchen with speakers and an iPad docking station. For those who use their phones or tablets to search for recipes, the traditional recipe book holder has been replaced with a gadget holder. These handy holders will display your tablet for ease of reference, keeping it away from the mess of the kitchen work surface. They even charge your gadget at the same time!
Functional design is another big trend that has been gaining in popularity. From units with pull-out shelving or built-in features such as knife blocks, wine racks and kitchen roll holders, it’s easier than ever to arrange your kitchen practically and make the most out of your space. Pull-out larder cupboards are especially popular too, signalling an end to rummaging around in dark cupboards!
As horizontal cabinets gain in popularity, more storage options are becoming available. For example, many companies now offer toe-kick draws under lower cabinets. These horizontal draws are more convenient than cupboards for many, as you can see the contents at a glance. These are great for storing away items like tea towels and kitchen rolls.
