“Necessity is the mother of invention,” is the cliché that has fueled the technological advancement that has spread worldwide. Through necessity have come many new innovative technologies such as medical advancements. Did you know that without the necessity to keep patients cool in the summer, the air conditioner might not have been invented? Dr. John Gorrie wanted to keep his patients cool in the extreme summer heat; he decided to create a device that used ice blocks and a fan to do just that. With Dr. Gorrie’s idea combined with other cooling machine ideas came the air conditioner. Eventually air conditioning systems would become prevalent in homes nationwide. With the surge of air conditioning, so came the population boom in cities across the nation, especially in the south.

Cities That Were Affected

Did you know that without the surge of air conditioning systems, major cities, such as Atlanta, Miami, Tampa, Orlando, Charleston, and others would not be so major? That’s because in the 1950’s central air conditioning was becoming more and more popular in homes. With newer technological advances in the air conditioning industry the supply and demand was in full swing to be more affordable for homeowners. With supply and demand high, the cost of air conditioning systems were reasonable to have installed in homes. Of course, down south the air is always hot and humid in the south, making homes inside stifling with heat.

Improvements in HVAC

With the rise of the air conditioning industry also came about the ways to do things better. You wouldn’t believe how cool environments provided better products, and a wealth of way to do things better. So, this too, also created an economic growth that helped spurn the urban sprawl. As the cooling effect took over the nation, cities that were somewhat stagnant in growth were noticing population booms. Take for instance, Las Vegas, after 1930, there was a southwestern migration, and people were making their homes in places that could now be climate controlled.

Collateral Industrialization

The acceleration of air conditioning services also helped pave the way for other industries such as medical, textile, commercial, and etc. Air conditioning helped these industries improve upon the way they did things. They helped the work environment improve its conditions for its workforce, therefore generating more jobs, and production sales went up. This is also created economic growth in cities that were not flourishing before the air conditioning boom.

So with climate controlled homes, businesses, and manufacturing companies people flocked to cities that were previously borderline ghost towns. The vast improvement in the quality of life was a refreshing change, than constantly being mired down by the thick humid air. School children actually started to stay in schools, and educational growth vastly improved. The increased education and continued education help more kids entering school to provide their families with a better life through higher education.

Surprising, Is It Not?

Who knew that one thing like air conditioning, which to some seems simple, but has had such a profound effect on today’s generation and future generations? Our future generations will have to deal with the excess of our energy consumption that has had to power all the air conditioning systems globally for decades now. There have been sanctions and regulations put into place now, that controls how efficiently HVAC systems work, and what type of refrigerant is used in them. In our comfort, we have created problems in our environment that can be remedied over time, but it will take every citizen of earth making a conscious effort to curb their energy consumption. Comfort always comes at a price, but with the innovative technologies of today, who knows what tomorrow may hold for our cooled air that has become a way of life.
